The San Diego Union Tribune has a very good piece summarizing the basic facts of cholesterol:
1. “Your body needs some cholesterol in order to function… But the body only needs a limited amount of cholesterol and when thereโs too much, health problems may result, including heart disease.”
2. “High cholesterol can be hereditary. Genetic factors are among the most common causes for high levels of LDL (also known as ‘bad' cholesterol) and triglycerides. ”
3. “Even kids can have problems with high cholesterol… The National Institutes of Health suggests that all children get a cholesterol screening at age 10.”
4. “Even a little weight loss can improve levels of cholesterol.”
5. “Cholesterol levels often rise after menopause in women. Before they reach menopause, the majority of women have total cholesterol levels that are lower than that of men who are the same age.”
