We have noted previously the serious impact that stress has not only on employees, but also on a company's financial health.

The International Stress Management Association notes that “11.7 million working days were lost in 2015-16 due to stress, depression or anxiety, according to the Health and Safety Executive.”

Further,  Workplace Insights reports that “Over a third of workers have left a job because of the stress it caused them.” In fact, “More than half (53 percent) of employees feel too afraid to show signs of stress at work.”

And yet a new Gallup report highlights how widespread the stress problem might be: “Eight in 10 Americans Afflicted by Stress.”

The piece states: “About eight in 10 Americans say they frequently (44%) or sometimes (35%) encounter stress in their daily lives. Just 17% say they rarely feel stressed, while 4% say they never do.”

Key Stress Factor: Work

Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the key stress factors is work — highlighting the positive role that a well-run workplace wellness program could play in helping employees.

Gallup reports that “being short on time and feeling stressed are much more common experiences among employed Americans and parents of children under 18 than among adults without these significant obligations in their lives.”

Further: “Naturally, work and family obligations have a compounding effect, so that working parents are especially likely to feel short on time and stressed. By contrast, those who neither work nor have children are the least likely to feel this way.”
