Sometimes it's hard to remember that cities are workplaces, too. And in California, there's a focused effort on employee wellness in cities.
In fact, in 2008, then-San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom signed Executive Directive 08-10 on Physical Activity, Nutrition, and Food Systems. The Directive states that “The annual costs of physical inactivity in San Francisco that leads to chronic disease have been estimated to be over $1 Billion. However, if as few as 5% of inactive San Franciscans became physically active, it could save an estimated $57,894,328 per year.”
The Cities for Workforce Health Initiative “provides much needed resources to cities to help improve employee health, productivity and morale. Online resources are immediately available to League members. A series of webinars and a competitive grant program will be available to HEAL Cities that meet initiative criteria.”
Not only are the site's lessons good for cities, but many businesses could benefit from them, too.
