Summer’s Here: Simple Ways to Stay (or Get) Active

Screen Shot 2015-05-21 at 11.43.41 AMIn anticipation of the unofficial (though most welcome!) start to summer, we recognize the #MoveInMay effort that you may have noticed in your social media feeds.

May is the National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, led by the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. But while their focus is on the important goal of helping our kids stay fit, plenty of other organizations are focused on adults and helping the rest of us find ways to stay fit — in other words, to Move In May (and the rest of the summer):

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers a discussion and tips on “Measuring Physical Activity Intensity.” We've noted plenty of studies recently that show even small amounts of physical activity (especially intense activity) are helpful. The CDC explains differences between “moderate” and “vigorous” activity, and lists examples of each.

ChooseMyPlate.gov also looks to help adults stay active and offers its “10 tips to help adults include physical activity into their lifestyle.” As ChooseMyPlate.gov notes: “Adults who are physically active are less likely to develop some chronic diseases than adults who are inactive. Physical activity is any form of exercise or movement of the body that uses energy. People of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities can benefit from a physically active lifestyle.”

Tips include:

  • Start activities slowly and build up over time
  • Get your heart pumping
  • Make active choices throughout the day
  • Increase your effort: Add more intense activities once you have been moderately active for a while.

For more ideas, check out healthfinder.gov. Just some of their tips include:

  • Encourage families to make small changes, like taking a walk after dinner or going for a bike ride.
  • Motivate teachers and administrators to make physical activity a part of every student’s day.
  • Identify youth leaders in the community who can talk to their peers about the importance of being active.

Another way to stay fit: Quit smoking. Smokfree Women launched its Quit Kit Pinterest Contest through the end of May: “Create your virtual quit kit pinboard on Pinterest for a chance to have your kit featured on the Smokefree Women Facebook page and the Smokefree Women website. Check out our Quit Kit pinboard for ideas or search the hashtag #QuitKit on Pinterest.” Its Healthier Lifestyle page also provides “information and tools to help support you on your path to health and well-being.”

In other words, as summer now unofficially arrives, there are plenty of ways to Move In May — and all summer long!
