Understanding the Unique Stigma of Minority Mental Health

There is a unique stigma that surrounds minority mental health. Don’t get me wrong, mental health in general is stigmatized, but there’s a different stigma when it comes to the black community.

We are a culture of honor. We don’t like to be disrespected. And that doesn’t sound like a bad thing, but if we’re not careful, it can become one of the mental health barriers that we face. When we admit that we’re struggling with mental illness or disorders like depression, we can start to feel like we’re disrespecting ourselves.

Mental health stigma awareness is crucial in empowering people to get the help they need.

In this mental health stigma video, I share about this unique stigma in minority cultures and communities. I also talk about the role that the strong black man plays in this stigma. I’ve shared about the perception and idea of the “strong black man” in a previous blog post linked below. As we address the stigma, there’s a need for us to redefine what it means to be healthy, strong, and whole.

There are also a few minority mental health tips I share that I believe are important for change, as well as a few things we can do to improve the situation for black and brown youth and the community as a whole.

Understanding the Self Care Definition vs Escapism

Self-care is a popular buzzword these days, but do you really know what it means? Understanding the self care definition is important for your mental health.

In this video, I give a very specific example of the difference between self-care and escapism from a conference that I was attending as a mental health speaker in the past.

There are several common behaviors that people think qualify as self care but they’re actually escape behaviors. Escapism activities are not the same as self care and do not provide the same benefits for your mental health and personal development as self-care. But lots of people turn to these behaviors as a form of stress relief. This is why understanding the difference between the two is key to helping you learn how to do self-care in a way that works in your life.
