Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how you can quickly begin to improve your mental health with self-care as a middle school or high school student (step by step).
In fact, in this video, I'm going to share with you 3 actionable things that you can start doing today that will help you reduce and control the stress in your life.
With that, here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Too often there are news headlines that show that America’s youth are struggling with mental health. From suicides to school shootings, we can see the proof that students are struggling. And even though I’m an adult, I get it because I struggled with my own mental health throughout my childhood and teenage years.
Now as a mental health speaker, I enjoy getting to travel the country and talk about school mental health with middle school and high school students. One of the things that I like to do is share self-care tips with students. A lot of students don’t realize they are experiencing problems with their mental health because they call it “stress” instead.
The three tips I share in this video are great ways to start self-care for students:
Get yourself up in the morning
Do a mind sweep throughout the day
Three self-care questions to ask yourself
When you learn how to include these three things in your day, it can help you start to control and manage stress and improve your mental health. Whether you’re looking for self-care for middle schoolers or self-care activities for high school students, this is a great place to get started.
These tips won’t take your depression away, but they can help you learn to make your depression more manageable.
Leave information on hotlines and free resources to reach out to if you’re having a rough time.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways you can reduce stress and mental health challenges by improving your self-care in 2019.

Today you're going to learn EXACTLY why a morning routine (or morning ritual) is important, how I approach mine, and how to get started developing your own (step by step).
In fact, in this video, I'm going to tell you exactly what I do for my morning routine along with what I do when I find myself in a morning rush.
With that, here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
My morning routine or morning ritual is all about self-care. As a mental health advocate and someone who struggles with depression, anxiety, and OCD, my morning routine helps me start the day on the right foot. But there are many reasons why you should have a morning routine even if you don’t struggle with your own mental health.
The most successful people in the world start their day with a morning routine. Their routines aren’t the same. They each have their own, but they have something that they do to help them have a productive start to their day.
My morning routine consists of six things that I got from the book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. If you are looking for morning routine ideas, I urge you to give these a try. The six things are:
Silence
Affirmations
Visualizations
Exercise
Reading
Scribing
In the video I also share what I do if I find myself in a rush with little time in the morning. As a speaker, I find myself traveling often and sometimes have early morning flights to catch. That doesn’t mean I throw my routine out the window for the day. Find out how I handle these types of mornings as well as tips on how to get started with your own routine in the video.
I also discuss the difference between escape activities and self-care activities. I truly believe that starting a morning routine will have a positive impact on your mental wellness.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to improve your mental health with a morning routine in 2019.

Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how to approach self care for managing your mental health (step-by-step).
In fact, in this video, I'm going to share some of the specific tools that have worked for me.
With that, here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Self care is an important component of mental wellness. As a person who has lived with mental health challenges for most of his life, I know firsthand how critical it is. I live with depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
I discuss going to therapy, my psychiatrist, and my mental health support group. In addition, I also discuss exercise. One thing that I didn't discuss was taking your prescription medication on time. It's important to only make medication adjustments with the guidance and recommendation of a mental health professional.
Please understand that practicing self care doesn't mean that your mental health challenges will go away. What it does do is make living with mental health challenges significantly more manageable. Someone once told me that you can manage what you can measure. Self care is measurable.
For example, how many times did you exercise this week? How many sessions with your therapist have you had this year? Have you been getting enough sleep?
I encourage you to embrace these self care tips, strategies, and create your own self care routine. When you choose to take care of yourself, for some oddball reason, you begin to feel better about yourself. And that's what I want for you.
In short, this video will show you actionable self care tips in 2019.

Today you're going to see my keynote from the Peace of Mind Tyler Conference in 2017.
In fact, in this video, I'm going to show you mental health is a critical component of the diversity and inclusion conversation.
My name is Mike Veny and I am a diversity and inclusion speaker who is focused on mental health. When you look at mental health through the perspective of diversity and inclusion, you gain better insight on how to transform the stigma surrounding mental health. People living with mental health colleges have the potential to bring a unique contribution to any team or work environment.
People living with mental health challenges are often treated as a liability and feel like a liability in professional environments. The stigma surrounding mental health makes it difficult for them to perform at their best. In fact, firmly believe that this stigma contributes to decreased productivity and ultimately absenteeism. This downward spiral decreases an organizations profitability.
It's time to make a change in how we view mental health in professional environments. Not only should we be talking about, but we should be embracing it.
I deliver presentations like this as a keynote speaker at conferences, companies, colleges, and schools. At a recent event I spoke at, I learned about the importance of saying the word, “inclusion” before you say, “diversity”. This is simply due to the fact that focusing on inclusion is the beginning of diversity.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to mental health as a component of diversity and inclusion in 2019.

Anger Management: How to Control Anger – 2020 – (Actionable!)
Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how to start controlling your anger(step-by-step).
In fact, in this video, I'm going to share with you the three things that have made a difference in my own life.
With that, here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
I’ve struggled with anger management my entire life. My childhood was full of examples of my lack of knowing how to deal with anger. In the video, I share some specific examples of how this played out throughout my school years. I was an angry person.
As an adult, I still struggle with anger management. However, while in my childhood I acted out, often aggressively, now as an adult I tend to go too far the other direction and bottle it up. Neither option is a good one and that’s why you need to learn how to control anger.
I’ve found there are three things that have helped me and it’s not reading anger management books or counting to ten. Here are the three things that I talk about in the detail:
Learning that anger can be depression in disguise.
Learning to identify where you are holding anger in your body and what you can do to release it (Hint-hint, it involves a few types of yoga).
The fact that anger isn’t always a bad thing. You can actually learn to turn your anger into a positive thing.
If you want to learn how to let the anger go, this is the video for you.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to learn how to control your anger in 2019.

Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how a drumming school assembly program can engage and teach students.
In fact, in this video, I'm going to show you firsthand how I conduct my program, “Drumming Up Your Feelings.”
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Holding people’s attention during presentations and talks can be difficult. And this is all the more true when working with children. That leaves school administrators fighting an uphill battle when contemplating school assembly ideas.
As a mental health speaker and professional drummer, I have created school assembly programs that will engage the students to the point that they are having so much fun, they don’t even realize they are also being taught important lessons.
I work with art education programs in schools of various sizes, including working with BOCES programs to make it easier for schools to provide these programs for their students. “Drumming Up Your Feelings” is a hands-on, fun way for students to experience arts in education while learning the important skills for teamwork. Teachers and administrators won’t need to constantly remind students to sit quietly and listen throughout the presentation because each child has a role to play.
As you’ll see in the video, these programs are not your average school assembly. They are effective with students of all ages (and adults too!). These programs are also great confidence builders as students are able to try something new and succeed at it.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways that a drumming assembly program can benefit your school in 2019.

Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how you can overcome challenges in your mental health.
In fact, in this video, you will hear author and speaker Vikie Shanks share some of her own personal story with mental health along with how she was able to overcome obstacles that life brought her way.
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Vikie has been through many trials throughout her life. She was sexually abused as a child, lost her mother at sixteen years old, suffered a mental breakdown at nineteen, had a husband who struggled with mental health and eventually committed suicide, and has helped her seven children cope with struggles from cerebral palsy and autism to eating disorders and depression.
Yet she has remained optimistic through it all. Her ability to overcome adversity makes her an inspiration we can all learn from. Sometimes when overcoming challenges we have to focus on one minute at a time. One of the tips that Vikie explains during our conversation is the importance of finding the thing or person that is your motivation to keep going.
She draws from her own experience to empathize with others in their trials. She also offers up some sound advice throughout our conversation that’s beneficial for anyone in the midst of a mental health struggle. And having been on both sides – being through trials and helping others through them – she has some wise words about being honest with those who are supporting you, both when you are doing well and when you aren’t.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to overcome challenges in 2019.

Today you're going to learn EXACTLY what I think is contributing to the mental health challenges facing teenagers (and adults) that many people are overlooking.
In fact, in this video, I'm going to show you a practical step you can take to improve your mental health that is so easy ANYONE can do it.
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
The statistics are being discussed all over the place. The number of teens dealing with mental health challenges is continuing to rise. There is talk about bullying and suicide and people are searching for an answer. There are plenty of theories out there in the world including too much time on the phone and social media. But I have my own theory—it all started with air conditioning.
We live comfortable lives with many conveniences, like air conditioning that made it possible for us to not need to go outside of our homes even during hot summer months. Before that happened it was hot inside, which pushed people outside where they came face-to-face with neighbors and friends. Now cell phone use allows us to go about our lives without really connecting with other people face-to-face. We have our friendships over social media and the number of people working from home is increasing.
And it’s not just in our homes. Even when we are with people we aren’t looking at them and conversing with them. Cell phone use at school and cell phone use at work is stealing away the time when we should be having these face-to-face connections. How many times have you been at a restaurant and noticed groups sitting at the table together but everyone was looking down at a phone? It’s an epidemic that we need to change so we can improve our mental health awareness.
In short, this video will show you an actionable way to control cell phone use and connect with others to improve mental health in 2019.

Today we’re talking about how societal consciousness impacts mental health in the black community.
In fact, in this video, I'm going to show you how this has impacted my own life as a black man with mental health challenges.
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Vikie Shanks, a white woman, and I, a black man, sit down to discuss a topic that often gets swept under the rug—the role societal consciousness plays in mental health within the black community. It’s an “uncomfortable” conversation that we were both very comfortable discussing.
As a black man who lives with mental health challenges, it’s been difficult. There is a stigma in society about the “strong black man”, yet there is no real definition of what that means. Can I be a strong black man if I have mental health challenges? Absolutely!
I’ve been working to redefine what this definition looks like. In order to do this, I’ve identified a few things that we need to work on changing in the black culture such as using the common mental health terminology and improving access to healthcare. To improve black mental health, these areas need to be addressed along with others.
To improve black mental illness we need to be willing to have these types of uncomfortable conversations. In this video, Vikie and I share some ways to make this possible. If we want to break down the barriers between races we need to stop walking on eggshells and starting talking to each other.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways that we can improve mental health in the black community in 2019.

The mental health system is broken around the world. Today you're going to learn what the barriers are and EXACTLY what you can do to make a difference for those in your life.
In fact, in this video, Vikie Shanks and I share real-life situations where the system is failing and practical ways that any person can help to fill the gap.
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Vikie and I discover and discuss the similarities of the mental health systems in the UK and the US. Even though the countries are separated by an entire ocean and the health insurance options are different, the barriers to mental health treatment remain the same. They include things like long waiting lists at mental health facilities and people being treated as if their situation is not serious enough to warrant seeking treatment.
It’s important that we expand mental health awareness in order to put an end to this global crisis. While we work on eliminating these barriers to mental health care access, Vikie and I share some strategies that you can use with family and friends in your own life who are struggling. We share practical tips on what you can do and say to show your loved one that you care and support them.
We also discuss the importance of open dialogue between caregivers and family members. While many people realize the struggle that people with mental health challenges face, they don’t realize how exhausting it can be for the family members or friends who are helping to support them. Vikie shares a few pointers on what to do in this situation.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to rise above the barriers in the mental health system for yourself and your loved ones in 2019.

Today we delve into the sometimes controversial topic of gender roles and discuss how men can be healthier in their masculinity.
In fact, in this video, we talk about some of the reasons men are struggling to know their role these days and what can be done about it.
Here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
A lot of attention gets focused on the topic of gender equality, and rightly so. Women deserve equal pay for equal work and to know they can go to work in a safe environment. However, as the feminist movement has risen to fight for what they deserve, a shift has happened that makes it difficult for men to understand what our role is.
What does healthy masculinity look like in a society that tends to paint it in a bad light? Vikie Shanks and I dive head first into this topic. We discuss things like:
The natural roles of men and women from centuries ago
The need for women to embrace their femininity and men their masculinity
How the feminist movement has left men unsure how to treat women (e.g., do we hold the door open for women or give up our seat on the subway? Or does that make it look like we think they are the “weaker sex”?)
The importance of men stepping up to talk about issues like mental health
How to take out anger and aggression in appropriate ways
In short, if you are a man, this video will show you actionable ways to embrace your masculinity in 2019. If you are a woman, this video might help you see through the eyes of the men in your life.

Description:
Today you're going to learn EXACTLY how you can show empathy to others.
In fact, in this video, I'm going to introduce you to a friend of mine, Vikie Shanks, who learned how to empathize the hard way—by going through challenging situations. She shares with us how the difficult times she's been through have helped her to connect with others.
With that, here's a quick overview of what's in the video:
Vikie Shanks shares with me some of the personal and difficult experiences that she has been through in life. However, instead of getting stuck in these situations she has used them to help her learn to connect and empathize with others who are going through similar experiences. But it doesn’t stop there. We also discuss how we can show empathy to people even if we haven’t been through the same situation as them.
In this video, Vikie and I talk about the importance of sharing our own personal stories with others and the need for more people to be open and honest. When it comes to transforming the stigma around mental health, part of the problem is that too many people aren’t willing to talk about it. The more we are able to share, the more we are able to help people on both sides of the situation.
We share a few tips that you can use on how to talk to others to help them open up and be honest about their situations.
In short, this video will show you actionable ways to connect with and show empathy for others in 2019.

Remember, transforming the stigma around mental health starts with getting it into the conversation. Don’t be afraid to share the unsugar-coated version of your story to help encourage others to do the same. The more people are able to see the reality that no one is living a “picture perfect life,” the more we can learn to empathize with others.

United Way of York County’s mission is to build a stronger, caring community by cultivating financial generosity, volunteerism and advocacy. They are connecting people in need with programs that help, focusing on education, health and financial stability.
United Way is kicked off York county’s largest annual fundraising campaign on August 30. They welcomed, leading mental health speaker, Mike Veny to share his experiences in addressing and erasing the stigma around mental illness. Guests also heard from a panel of local mental health experts at this free event.
“You look at people all the time and think they have their stuff together, but so many people are struggling. We had, I think, over 70 suicides here in York County in 2017,” Veny said.
That's why United Way officials felt like it was time to turn the focus on getting York County residents the help they need by raising money for partner agencies that deal with mental health.
“It shouldn't be a special subject that we talk about. We should talk about it in a normal voice, the same way we do allergies. If you think about it, people talk about mental health in a very low voice. They want to keep it private. We're the problem at that point,” Veny said.
