Today you’re going to learn EXACTLY what my depression sounds like.

In fact, in this video, I’m going to interview my depression.

Here’s a quick overview of what’s in the video:

Forget everything you’ve heard about depression. In this OC87 Recovery Diaries video, I actually sit down to interview my depression. We don’t get into a list of depression symptoms, depression tests, or get deep into a discussion about mental illness. Instead, my depression shares its raw emotion, thoughts, and feelings.

Have you ever wondered what depression quotes you would get if you heard from your depression? I’ll give you a hint: “I just live in pain,” and “I’m here to protect you.” Have you wondered things like:

What does my depression want?
Is there a purpose to depression?
Is my depression really at war with me?
When will my depression go away?

Mental health is no laughing matter. And while this video is a creative way to bring depression into the conversation, it’s also a very real picture of what my depression is saying to me.

If you struggle with depression, my hope is that this video will make you think about it in a different way. That maybe it will get you thinking about what your depression would say if you interviewed it and how that impacts the way you handle it and think about it.

If you don’t struggle with depression, my hope is that this video will give you a real look into what it’s like living with this mental health challenge.

In short, this video will show you what a struggle with depression looks like on a daily basis.

http://www.OC87RecoverYDiaries.com/mike-veny/ Mike Veny, weight lifter, professional musician, ted talker, and mental health keynote speaker, has something to say about what it means to be a real man with mental health issues. As anyone who has ever been afflicted by issues with mental health or has been the friend, family member, or loved one of someone who has suffered due to their issues with mental health can attest to, to hear Mike Veny speak is to hear some very real, very raw, and very poignant talk on the matter. Mike has made it his personal mission to not only talk about mental health issues and how they have affected his life but also to let his listeners know just how he has overcame and continues to overcome and to be an advocate for mental health awareness. He does this through traveling around the world as motivational and inspirational mental health speaker.

In his early years Veny was repeatedly expelled from school due to behavior problems and spent time in a psychiatric hospital on three different occasions. Veny admits that in his childhood the ‘real men’ he idolized were thugs, tough guys, and trouble makers, who in retrospect were more than likely suffering from mental health issues of their own. Anger, Veny says, is a common disguise for depression among men. Veny contends that this is especially true in a society in which many men are struggling to determine just what a healthy sense of masculinity is.

Mike says he has accepted that his battle with depression and anxiety may be an ongoing one and emphasizes that he only wants to be in control of his life. As a professional drummer, he uses his talent for personal therapy, reaching out to others, and for his continuing advocacy for understanding mental health issues. As a mental health keynote speaker some may find it odd that Veny never wanted to be a speaker in the first place. Mike says he’s far more interested in people not dying and only wants to be a disruption that will get people talking about mental health. Until the suicide rate drops to zero, Mike assures, he won’t close his mouth about mental health.

He is honored to have had the opportunity to work with OC87 Recovery Diaries to release this video on depression and masculinity.
