Much of the enjoyment around Thanksgiving, of course, comes from the ability to indulge — turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, and… more pumpkin pie!

But if you've been closely following your workplace wellness program (and we know you have!), you won't want to throw away 11 months of work for one (maybe two!) delicious meals. So how can you have the best of both worlds?

High Point University is offering a healthier guide to Thanksgiving. And don't worry, as they state at the top: “If you opt for a healthy Thanksgiving meal instead, it doesn’t mean it can’t also be enjoyable. With a few changes, you can make your ‘Turkey Day' an extension of your year-round commitment to good health.”

Tips include:

  • Have breakfast. “Eating a small meal in the morning can give you more control over your appetite, allowing you to be more selective in your food and beverage choices later on.”
  • Go skinless on the turkey. “Just 1 ounce of turkey skin contains 80 calories and 2 grams of fat. Also, be sure to use fat-free chicken broth to baste the turkey and to make the gravy.”
  • Use skim milk.
  • Exercise portion control.
  • Exercise, period! “Take a walk early in the day and then again after dinner. It is a wonderful way for families to get some physical activity and to enjoy the holiday together. For those who have the day off after Thanksgiving, plan an additional workout.”

And when you return to work on Monday, you can pickup with your employee wellness program guilt-free!
