“Many people underestimate the importance and value of workstation ergonomics. Without proper ergonomics, your body can undergo a tremendous amount of stress and damage from consistent poor posture and repetitive, unnecessary movements.”
Michelle Zaiser offers a few helpful tips for designing an ergonomic workstation and work day:
- Your office chair:
- Select an office chair that has adjustable height settings and adjustable height armrests.
- Be sure to sit with your buttocks all the way to the back of the chair seat.
- Your Desk:
- Angle your workspace around you.
- Make sure your computer monitor faces you directly. The monitor should be an arm’s length away from your face.
- Your keyboard should be placed at the base of your desk, with your mouse pad and mouse placed directly beside it.
- Place office supplies and items that you use most often within an arm’s reach on your desk.
- Remember to stretch:
- Take a break at least three times during your work day or shift to stretch. If you are seated at a desk, using a keyboard for most of the day, it is especially important to stretch your wrists, shoulders and neck.
