Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 11.15.34 AMA new report by Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor at Stanford University’s graduate school of business, finds that health and wellness programs “are essentially doomed to failure if the companies rolling them out have a toxic workplace culture,” according to HR Benefits Alert.

“Essentially, the stress of working in a place with a poor workplace culture cancels out any benefits that are garnered through a wellness program.”

As Pfeffer puts it: “… If I offer you health and wellness programs, and diet and exercise assistance, but I do not change the condition in which you work, I am fighting a losing battle… This should not be surprising to you: Stress kills. Nothing is more stressful than being in a workplace where you do not have control of the pace of what you are doing.”
